Less than 90 minutes south of us is a little city called Rome which is surrounded by scenic landscapes, parks, and trails. The Ridge and Valley Scenic Byway is a picturesque route that offers travelers a chance to experience the natural beauty and historical significance of the region. The Appalachian foothills in Rome, GA offer excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, and enjoying nature.
If you’re looking for a place to take family pictures, drive into the Berry College campus. Not only Is it the largest college campus in the country, it is one of the prettiest. Many weekends you will see couples and bridal parties in front of some of the campus buildings having their engagement or wedding photos taken.
Any Netflix fans out there? If you are familiar with the series, Stranger Things, keep your eyes peeled for the Creel house. It is a private residence so unfortunately, there are no tours available but you can still stop by the house to snap a quick photo.
For a cool dining experience check out Sam's deli. The restaurant's building is made of up of old airplanes and aircraft parts. Its right on the highway and is easy to spot with their main sign being a flying Volkswagen Minibus! The theming is unlike any other restaurant in our area. We stop by almost every time that we are passing through and the burgers are always excellent.
Why not see a game while your there? Rome is the home to the Emperors, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Atlanta Braves that plays in the South Atlantic League. They were also know as the braves until recently when they changed the name to differentiate themselves from the parent company. Attending a game at State Mutual Stadium is a popular pastime for residents and visitors alike. The team’s mascot, The Swingin’ Penguin (emperor penguin--get it?) is a beloved figure who makes regular appearances at games and community events.
Just 10 miles southwest of Rome is Cave Spring, which has a quaint little downtown area with unique shops and restaurants. While you are there, you can also tour the cave and play in the spring-fed, lake-size pool in the park! Adjacent to the park is the area's namesake, Cave Spring. Make sure to bring your water jugs to fill up with fresh spring water from the cave. Tours of the cave may also be available during certain times of the year.
Rome is an easy day trip from Chattanooga and has so much to see and do that it could turn into a few day trips!
